Welcome to the WEST TEXAS RUNNING CLUB Internet site. Our main purpose is to promote distance running as an aid to physical fitness and longevity and if need be, an alternative "Positive addiction". We also wish to unite runners of every level of ability and interest, to exchange good health and training ideas, to train together and participate in races, but most of all to promote friendship and camaraderie among all the area runners. Our monthly club races are primarily designed to offer each member a yardstick for measuring personal accomplishments and not competition against each other. We try to offer encouragement to all. Our club is the only running club west of the metroplex and north of Austin which conducts at least one race per month.
Our club is small by many standards--(approximately 300 members) but fairly active. The club was formed in 1972 and has continued to sponsor monthly races which offer low entry fees, yet has nice age group awards. One of these is the 4th of July "FIRECRACKER RUN", in Brownfield, Texas, which originated in 1970 and has the distinction of being the longest standing continual road race in the state of Texas. Two other monthly races have been held at the same location and month every year since 1973. These races have some unique names, "HORSESHOE BEND CANYON SPRING FROLIC" (May) and "THE BUFFALO WALLOW HALF MARATHON" (November).
The club also assists in 2 larger community road races yearly. These races feature T-Shirts and a slightly higher entry fee than our "lower key" monthly events. In the Fall the RACE FOR THE CURE features over 3,000 Participants in an open 5K race. In the fall, the club produces the annual RED RAIDER ROAD RACE 5K and 10K, coinciding with Texas Tech University's Homecoming, attracting around 400 runners from around the state and nation. This race benefits the WTRC/TTU SCHOLARSHIP FUND. At Thanksgiving we produce the W.T.R.C TURKEY TROT 12K and 2 Mile races. Additionally, numerous "fund raising" events for other organizations are held which are sanctioned by and assisted by our club members.
Benefits of club membership include a monthly newsletter that contains injury and training tips. Also you will receive club news, race results, and membership in ROAD RUNNERS CLUB of AMERICA (RRCA). RRCA provides you with a quarterly newsletter and insurance protection during sanctioned events. Club members get reduced entry fees on all our monthly club races.
If you would like to join with us in supporting and promoting this healthful pastime you may e-mail our membership chairman, Sam Prose at firstname.lastname@example.org for a membership form and complimentary newsletter or click here and print out a membership form, make check payable and mail to:
