Our main purpose is to promote distance running as an aid to physical fitness and longevity and if need be, an alternative "Positive addiction". We also wish to unite runners of every level of ability and interest, to exchange good health and training ideas, to train together and participate in races, but most of all to promote friendship and camaraderie among all area runners. Our monthly club races are primarily designed to offer each member a yardstick for measuring personal accomplishments and not necessarily competition against each other. We offer encouragement to all runners, regardless of age or ability. Our club is the only Running Club west of the metroplex and north of austin which conducts at least one race per month.

2008 RUN FOR THE ARTS REPORT

___Perfect 58 degree weather greeted the 149 finishers in the 2008 Run For The Arts; 72 in the 15K and 77 in the 2 Mile. There were numerous outstanding performances and several new records. Highlighting the great races were Zach Quinones 50:58 winning performance in the 15K as well as Laura Helmus' 1:08:54 top female performance. New records in the 15K were registered by Mary Branscome in the 45-49 bracket with a 1:17:10 and Leesa Price's 1:15:33 in the 50-54 age group.

___The winning 2 mile times were recorded by Eric Ayala(10:38) and Liz Tate(15:23). New 2 mile men's age group records at both ends of the spectrum were recorded by Carter Tate(13:43 in the 6-12 AG)at one end, and Ron Lubowicz(15:53 in the mens' 65-69)at the other end. In the women's 2 mile, both new records were set at the senior end of the slate with Janis Waechter running a 22:04 in the 55-59 age brkt and P.J.Mitchell turning in a 17:37 to win the 60 and up bracket(P.J. set the 60 & over 15K record last year and also holds the 45-49 record in the 2 mile).

___Although the running performances were outstanding, the volunteer turnout this year was the best ever. Manning the packet pickup table at the Arts Festival on Friday were President and Mrs Lubowicz, David Higgins, Suzan Caudle and Tom Griffin. In addition to the timing team of Tom Griffin, Myriam Guardiola, Trevor Dalton and Tara Madrigal, the Saturday volunteers included Randy Holloway, Suzan Caudle, Elizabeth Linder, Rose Hoeve, Alexis Cortez, Joshua Hoeve, Glen Poklikuha, Jon and Jon David Bruegel, Milt Brownfield, Tony Aleman, Jimmy Clark, John Barrientos, Wayne Sullivan, Fred & Cheryl Weber, Lee Cohen, Eric Ford, Tyler Schovanec, Milynda Weis and Matt & Corinne Weis. Special thanks to George Jury for certifying the 15K course prior to the event as well as setting up the course and serving as lead cyclist thru most of the race. Additional thanks go out to the staff and girls from Girlstown,USA who once again took charge of the Broadway aid station.

___I would also like to add my personal thanks to United Supermarkets, the Lubbock Police Dept. and the Lubbock Arts Festival(Elizabeth Regner). United supplied the fresh fruit at the finish as well as over half of the T-shirt costs; the LPD was super in insuring runner safety and Elizabeth is always super to work with year end and year out.

Thanks again
Tom Weis, Race Dir.

RRRR
2008 RED RAIDER ROAD RACE SCHOLARSHIPS
West Texas Running Club is pleased to announce the West Texas Running Club/Texas Tech University Scholarship. Applicants must have a letter of nomination from a WTRC member, complete and submit a standardized application form and attend Texas Tech University. Preference will be given to undergraduate students who are permanent residents of West Texas as defined: the area north of Interstate 20 as far West as Pecos and to west of a line from Abilene to Wichita Falls. Preference will also be given to full-time students (minimum 12 credit hours) at who have completed at least one semester. Stipends of up to $500 per semester will be awarded based on the following criteria: participation in extracurricular activities, participation in school activities, leadership positions held, academic record and financial need. Special consideration is given to candidates who participate in activities that are consistent with the goals of the club. It is expected that recipients of this scholarship either run in or volunteer at West Texas Running Club races. Scholarship applications are due on May 1, 2008. In the event that funds are still available after the initial awards have been made, late applications will be considered.

Congratulations to the 2008 Fall semester winners of WTRC's RRRR scholarship, awarded twice a year to Texas Tech Students. The scholarship recepients are: Angela Campisi, Sarah Shutic and Glen Poklikuha... We look forward to seeing all winners at our annual Red Raider Road Race, which is a 10K and 5K run and always held on Texas Tech's homecoming Saturday. Notes from the President
How do you feel about running with headphones? If you are an open-ears runner(as I am), and if you run in low-to-moderate traffic(which I do not), your chances of having or causing an accident(broadly defined to include stepping off the pavement and twisting an ankle) decreases by about 400% compared to runners with earphones according to one recent study. (Who in the heck comes up with this stuff anyway?)
Then why do so many of us run wired for sound? The journals are filled with accounts ranging from overcoming boredom to dramatically enhancing performance. So maybe the answer is in the same realm as answers to such questions as "what running shoes do you prefer?" or "why do you run alone?" or "how can you run so early in the morning?"...there is no answer.
My guess is that someday there will be a "rule" that will prohibit the use of earpieces during formal events...if our legal system stays on it's current course, this is almost a sure thing. Should the WTRC worry about this in a pre-emptive way or should we just wait and see what happens out there(hopefully to some other club)?
If you have strong feelings on either side of the issue, please pen them in and we will publish your "letters to the editor" in future issues. Thanks for joining in.
SYOTR,
Ron Lubowicz
